The Bristol Good Food Awards 2018:

The Bristol Good Food Awards ceremony took place on Sunday 25th February and we were delighted to be highly commended in the Best Seafood and Best Wine List categories as well as being shortlisted for Best Fish and Chips!

For the past 6 years we have been finalists in a number of categories and we really appreciate all the support from our customers and all the hard work our staff put in to make The Spiny Lobster a restaurant to be proud of. We strive to make dining at The Spiny Lobster a wonderful experience and we look forward to our customers returning again and again to enjoy our yummy seafood!

The evening was very much enjoyed by everyone who attended. Congratulations to all the winners and well done to all that were nominated. See you next year!

Rough Runner 2018


Back in October on a wet and windy Sunday morning the Spiny Lobster team arrived bleary-eyed to Charlton Park in Malmesbury to take part in the Rough Runner challenge. We love a social get together on our days off and what better way to spend it than by running 5km with 13 obstacles interspersed along the way?!

We decided to do it for a good cause and thought the Seafarers UK would be a very apt charity to raise money for. The Seafarers UK support families of fishing people that have been injured at sea. It is a charity very close to our hearts as without these guys risking their lives to catch our fish we, as a restaurant wouldn’t exist, so we wanted to raise as much money as possible.

To say we were excited was an understatement! The charity had been kind enough to supply us with t-shirts for the event, so we arrived donning the bright green clothing raring to go and smash it!

The rain did not help matters in the slightest, making the obstacles even more challenging than we anticipated since they were so slippery! The course took us about an hour with a lot of giggling and shouting all the way round! The last obstacle was a travellator which, if we weren’t tired by the end, that definitely took it out of us! We passed the finish line covered in mud, soaked through but with smiles spread across all our faces. What was even better was the amazing support from our friends, family and customers that enabled us to raise £1000! We celebrated and recovered with a roast dinner and copious amounts of wine! Role Reversal

 Now here at the Spiny Lobster we love a challenge and we wanted to think outside the box with our next charity event and do something that might not have been done before.

When you think of dining out you automatically assume the chefs and the front of house staff will be experienced and knowledgeable in their field…and stay in their designated areas! Well, back in April we decided to turn everything on its head and do a Role Reversal evening to raise money for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) whereby the front of house team would cook the food and the chefs would serve the customers!

Most people thought we were mad, but we firmly believed that although it would be a lot of fun, we could also deliver our customers tasty food with competent service. And we are a stubborn, determined lot so none of us wanted to fail!

We helped each other out as much as possible, the chefs trained the girls on the Josper oven and cooking times for the fish and the side dishes as well as supervising us when making desserts. The boys from the kitchen were given pointers on the order of service (and customer service!).

As the evening drew closer and the bookings mounted up, the nerves started setting in and we all wondered what we let ourselves in for! Luckily for us the tables that were booked were mainly regulars so they would sympathise if things went wrong, plus it was for charity so we knew everyone would pay!

As soon as the tables started filling up we all got into the swing of it and the night was a huge success. The fish was cooked to perfection and all the plates came back clear. The boys did an amazing job serving the customers and everyone left with a smile on their face and full tummies! The feedback we got was incredible and we were delighted and incredibly proud that achieved what we did as well as raise over £300 for the lifeboats.

Woodchester Valley Vineyard

 We are now stocking a beautiful English (vegan) wine from Woodchester Valley Vineyard based in the Cotswalds. There is still somewhat of a stigma attached to wine from this country but we are firm believers that we can produce some incredible wine and the wine makers at Woodchester are a testament to that.

The Spiny Lobster team love a jolly on our days off so when we were invited to have a look around the vineyard and sample their delicious wines we jumped at the chance!

We arrived at the site and were immediately offered a glass of their sparkling wine and a tour of the vineyard. What better way to spend your day off than by strolling throught the vines with the sun shining brightly sampling an English glass of fizz?!

After our wander we sat ourselves down on their outside seating area and sampled all the wine they had to offer. Which were a fair few! And all of them, despite their difference in taste went down a treat and were very much enjoyed by the whole team.

We are really excited to have this wine on our list and our customers are thoroughly enjoying it as well. Maybe we will stock one of their sparkling wines soon….

Congratulations 2019 graduates!

 Another year, another graduation and The Spiny Lobster are delighted to be welcoming all those graduating through our door. Since the restaurant opened it has very much been thought of as a place to come for a special ocassion or celebration and we are thrilled so see our graduates and proud family members flock through the doors and tuck into a fishy feast!

This year is no exception and we look forward to seeing the class of 2019 soon. Congruations to you all!
